CORTINA: Tango Dance Workshop

We welcome Fernanda Ghi (Broadway show Forever Tango, PBS Special ‘Tango Magic’, World Argentine tango champion, judge at ’Tango Mundial’, the World Competition for Argentine tango) in her first trip to Montana.
Fernanda's performance and award winning resume is remarkable however her passion to teach and share the message of tango is her priority.
The Sunday workshops for established dancers focus on the ROLES within Tango. The distinct difference between roles AND the relationship roles have to each other is critical to understanding what sets Tango apart from all other dances. Pivots and Giros will be the steps used to deepen this understanding. Although roles were originally created along gender lines, each role has a distinct track that communicates an ask and answer, action and reaction, call and response. *Non-Tango dancers are invited to observe at no cost.

*this warm-up practica allows Montana Tangueros to connect with each other and allow Fernanda to observe our dancing in order to inform her teaching.

Roles in Tango: the Mechanics of the Pivot
Mechanics is defined as the working parts of something. In tango, we focus on the independent movement of body parts, according to time and shifting of speed and the interaction between the roles.

Dynamic within partnership.
Dynamic is characterized by constant change, activity, or progress. Being in tune with the elasticity and tension within a partnership dynamic is key to deepening the quality of your experience.

Who Will You Become When Tango Chooses You?

Immerse yourself in a night of tango unlike anything you have ever experienced.
Tango is a thing that transports you, consumes you, takes over your waking life, and even your dreams.
As you walk up the stairs to The Attic in downtown Livingston Montana, you will be transported into the culture and lifestyle of a modern day tango dancer.
Doors open at 6pm with bartenders ready to serve you as you sample Argentinian street food. Nashville musician Thom Donovan (Body of Proof, The Good Wife, Nashville) plays live acoustic Americana, folk, and tango with a fusion of sounds that inspire CORTINA.
Master of Ceremonies and Bozeman comic Garrison Choitz will start the evening at 7pm. Fernanda Ghi ((Broadway show Forever Tango, PBS Special ‘Tango Magic’, World Argentine tango champion, judge at ’Tango Mundial’, the World Competition for Argentine tango) will have a 'charlesmos', Spanish for 'let's have a chat' about what tango means to her and to society.
Harper Klay, creator of CORTINA will set up each of the three sister series of CORTINA with monologues capturing the storylines. The three music videos will display on a drop screen with original music composed by Thom Donovan. Each music video is a visual presentation summarizing the three tv series dramas through images curated by Gabby Jeong (Seoul, Korea).
For the first time, Thom Donovan will premiere The Maestra theme song, the universal character of CORTINA in which Fernanda Ghi will lead Harper Klay in an improvised dance.
To complete the presentation/performance portion of the evening, Garrison will moderate a Q&A in which the audience can ask the performers/presenters about the development process.
At 8:30pm the party starts with a Milonga, the social event where Tangueras y Tangueros dance tango to set lists curated by DJ Thom Donovan. Music from the both Golden Age of tangos and current day will play.
CORTINA is a series of revelations, the series itself a procedural, and its subject an examination of the awareness and change of the human psyche. Because once you become a tango dancer you search for the fantasy in the realistic.
Leave the night with a feeling of euphoria and ponder who you will become when tango chooses you . You will have peaked behind the cortina into the development process of a tv series about the global subculture of the Argentine tango community.
Why here? Why now? Harper Klay hails from a 5th generation Montana cattle ranch. She sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury and found tango while working in the Kingdom of Jordan. This is her story.
